They talk slower coz that's what they always do in national politics. Did you watch Obama? Are you watching the GOP canidates? The only one who talks fast is Gingrich. They are taught to talk slow to make it seem like they are being thoughtful and reasonable.

@fratdawgg23 Yes. His dad lost because he was painted as an elitist who didn't care about the poor. George W Bush who lived in the east coast for most of his life was picked to be the next president so Karl Rove painted a strategy of moving to Texas and being more "folksy". George W Bush may be an evil bastard, however he is not stupid. He pretended to be stupid to win election and it worked everyone who thought he was unintelligent is the true idiot.

I read a while back that Bush presented himself differently when running for governor of TX. Courtesy of Karl Rove: he got him to buy that ranch, which Bush used mostly for pictures and image; advised him to be less detailed, more broad. Theory was he would appear less 'New England rich' to middle - lower Americans and it worked, enough people bought the corn pone routine.

why does it seem that nobody here has considered the fact that it was a concious decision to 'dumb-down' his appearance to the public?
Politics is all about perception, and G.W.B. comes from Texas. He is incredibly well educated, and comes from an extremely prestigious, privileged and wealthy family.
Considering that a number of Republican voters are none of these things, he tried to mould his public persona into something they could relate to.

Guilt is a deadly thing, the guilt of unilateral taking us into war, the guilt of being dumb enough to be conned by the neo-cons and have his administration hijacked by his vice president while he went along with it, the guilt of not living up to his policies of non interventionism, the guilt of being weak and misled, guilt make you do and say stupid things, guilt make you act stupid, that is what happened to dumb ol Bush.
