1998 Brittney McConn - US Nationals Ladies LP

It was a very proud moment for Atlanta skating when Brittney started appearing on television with the National finals. Dick Button was actually a bit smitten with her, mostly for her wonderful layback, and high, powerful jumps in the tradition of Dorothy Hamill. When this Les Misearables program worked successfully, it was absolutely glorious. I liked the way she occasionally became trancendent on the ice and skated with ecstatic abandon, reminding me of other greats....Janet Lynn, Barbara Smith, and Tiffany Steigler.

Although she appeared often on television, I do not think she is the highest ever finisher in Senior ladies from Atlanta. I think that honor belongs to an earlier 1980's skater Jacki Ferrell. Perhaps a commenter can verify that for me. Another Atlanta skater, Leslie Sykes, won a bronze in Novice Ladies in 1979. Valerie Vanness was another very artistic National competitor from Atlanta.
