The series of meetings on Drugs Affecting Lipid Metabolism (DALM) first began in 1960 in Milan and was chaired by Professor Rodolfo Paoletti. It has continued to be held every three years and has been co-chaired first by Dr. David Kritchevsky and later by Dr. Antonio M. Gotto, Jr. The symposia have historically alternated between the United States and Italy, however, for the first time since the symposia began, DALM 2011 was held in Doha, Qatar, (March 2011) in order to address the emerging pandemic of diabetes, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome within the Middle East.
