@chiquitabonitad - I'm not from Indian background, so this may be wrong, but: taking cultural cues from the film; watch the scene where her Mother goes to visit her and pay close attention. She mentions that her daughter doesn't appreciate the true value of her BLACK BEADS and what they mean for her. I'm not sure if it's only based on the reality of this story or true Indian culture, but it appears that for the story at least - the beads signify a binding marriage.
