KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said more exposure of fraud could be expected in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) probe into the party's educational arm -- Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED). Commenting on the MACC's visits to MIED office to gather evidence, collect data and quiz their staff, Samy Vellu said his silence all this while had been construed as an admission of guilt.

"But now, the culprits' names will be released. This (the exposure) is just a beginning of a big siphoning exercise. Many more are going to come out. It's the greatest robbery of the century."

He said the MACC was going through MIED accounts as "a lot of money has been siphoned out by a lady", he said yesterday after chairing MIC's central working committee (CWC) meeting.

"They are going through the three cheques totalling RM4 million which were signed by Tan Sri M. Mahalingam, who was the then MIED Capital chairman."

Samy Vellu said the money was siphoned by the woman into her personal account, her husband's account and that of her brother-in-law.

When asked if he was questioned by the MACC officers, he said they did not do so.

It is understood that Mahalingam, another MIED Capital signatory, Tan Sri K. Kumaran, and the former Maika Holdings chairman Tan Sri Rashid Manap had been questioned by the MACC officers.

Earlier, Samy Vellu said all the 3,600 MIC branches nationwide would be given specific activities to perform throughout this year, under the People First Programme.

One of them will be the preparation of a year planner by all the branch heads, mapping out their programmes for the year.

He said the activities would be monitored by the CWC and if the branches failed to carry out activities as per their programme, they would be hauled up for explanation.

Samy Vellu said from mid-February, he would visit the branches and monitor the progress made.
