"Viewer Discretion" was for easily-offended adults- they might have been old enough to watch it, but it would still offend them so they were warning those people in advance.

Well, not really. When someone says "viewer discretion is advised" it usually means that the content in the show is not appropriate for children. "Parental discretion is advised" means that kids can watch the show but not without their parents present.
