Tens of thousands protest against Iran president

TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian opposition supporters have clashed with riot police and hardliners, as tens of thousands marched in Tehran in the first major protest against the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in two months.

Protesters defied warnings from top officials against demonstrating Friday, during the government's annual display of support for the Palestinians. Several protesters were detained.

Reformist leaders, including former president Mohammad Khatami, joined supporters in the rally. Reports say Khatami was attacked by hardliners and had to leave the protest after his turban was knocked off.

The commemoration, known as Quds Days, is a major political occasion for the government to rally against Israel and the West.

(A rally in Iran turned violent Friday as opposition supporters defied warnings and thronged the streets. Meanwhile, President Ahmadinejad repeated his claim that the Holocaust was a lie.)

Speaking at Tehran University, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the Holocaust a lie by Western nations designed to create a pretext for the creation of the Jewish state of Israel.

Following Iran's disputed June 12 elections, rights groups said hundreds of people were detained in clashes with security forces during anti-government demonstrations.

Since then, authorities have held public trials of the accused and have tried to marginalize moderate officials within the government.
