Have you ever wondered what your off-hand (non-shooting or "guide" hand) should be doing when you are shooting a basketball?

http://www.shotscience.com

In this video, Coach Tom discusses how to turn your "Guide Hand" into an "Assist Hand." In no uncertain terms, the Assist hand should not be involved at all with the shot once your shooting-arm begins its extension towards the basket; it should only "assist" in supporting the ball as you hold it in the Set Point. As the shot extends, the assist hand releases and falls away. There is no guiding of the shot at all! When you shoot a basketball, you should essentially be shooting a One-Armed shot!!

If you're struggling with where to put your off-hand and how much pressure to use, try our tips and we think you'll be very happy with the results! Let us know what you think in the comments.

Just so you know, there are many more ball handling/dribble videos coming and, of course, tons more videos on all things basketball!!

We look forward to all of your comments! Thanks so much for all the support! We'd love to get a video response from one of you!

Please send our videos or the Shot Science Channel to your friends and family and help us to keep growing and make better videos!!

See you soon!!

  • I heard that your hand placement before shooting a basketball is that you should make a "T" with your thumbs. is that true?

  • @aznzero983 Well, this has been around for decades and it works to help you keep the Assist Hand on the side of the ball instead of around front of the ball. Use whatever works for you.

  • these videos helped me sooo much , u dont want to imagine how ugly my shooting style was before , my shooting arc was really flat and i use to squeeze the ball with my assist hand , well my playing style is attacking the basket , im really fast so yeah but i wanted to improve my shooting skills so i watched all these videos and they helped out alot , sometimes i feel i cant get a grip at the basketball and i just end up doing a ugly release , does that mean i need more practicing or what ?

  • @SiiCkNeSsPS3

.You can never practice your shooting enough. PRACTICE, PRACTICE and then PRACTICE some more.

  • hey coach so before seeing these videos i used to be a great shooter till i stop practing for a while then getting back in the gym after a few weeks i tried the same stroke and kept missing so would you have any tips on where should start cause my shooting mechanics are out of control plus now that my coach wants me to hit the wheights

  • @bigman52100 Bigman, go to our shooting videos an our YT channel and use these to re-build your shot. It will take a few weeks to get it done, but it will work for you. The weight should not really have any effect on your shot, but we recommend that you do a lot of stretching.

  • @aznzero983 We recommend that you check out our Vertical Jump videos for the stretching that we feel is important for you. Our players use these every day before practice and games. as far as the hands you probably need to learn to recoil your hands on the catch to soften the ball. This can be learned by spending a lot of time catching the ball.

  • okay and what kind of stretches should i do before a game? and also, in games i also tend to not catch the ball very well. should i make my hands wide or should i make them narrow?

  • @iReFlexGamingTM He does get his thumb into the shot more than is desirable, but it is released early enough to no screw up his stroke!

  • How about Jimmer Fredette unlimited range. His a thumber.
