  • "sold out"? What does that even mean? He was on Rough Trade and at that time they were woefully inadequate at distributing his records so he signed with Virgin. He still made the music he wanted to make. Do you think he should have stayed in a squat cos I don't think he'd be still making music or even alive if he had?

  • @xreddragonx No you shut up either you are too young or just dont remember a time when there was an "ethnic chart" in the US charts or a time when Madonna was seen as to black sounding to make it OR the huge taboo and fear from whites of early rock and roll (chuck berry, little richard) then the fear a generation later of rap music. like it or not black music has influenced acts from david bowie and the beatles to elvis to eminem.

  • Scritti did for funk what bands like the Beatles and the Stones did for R&B: reinvented it.

  • How 'bout that? Green wanted funk, so he went to America and got the real thing: two Jews. I love it. Black musicians will be tolerated playing black music only as long as they innovate. Otherwise they are replaced by others who have studied their music.

  • @Hyena400 ..well, fuck, I'LL cop to that! Of course! Scritti has NOT contributed meaningfully to the history of funk music itself, not by a long shot. But "funk" was never their mileiu, was it? After 1983, it was funk-tinged, glossy, sophisticated club-dance music, with a soul sheen that they pursued, and most admirably! It was an effort that was actually QUITE genuine, especially given Gartside's (et al) affinity for the genre, as can be witnessed by a listen to "Songs to Remember."

  • @Tre404 it's too much fun - lol

  • @Tre404 No, I'm not saying Maher & Gamson didn't contribute to the Scritti sound. I'm saying the role they & Scritti played in the history of funk is, was & remains microscopic, and before you accuse me of ignorance, check your knowledge of Black musical history. Scritti ain't in it.

Ps: i didn't use the word "snob" in my OP. being English I used the word "knob", which since you don't know is an insult meaning "penis". have a nice day.

  • @Hyena400... So you're saying that all that keyboard and rhythm work was done by other musicians? Really? You seriously have no idea what you're talking about. Maher and Gamson were absolutely INTEGRAL to the Scritti sound! You are totally clueless, and actual fact is lost on you. It's pointless to argue this point with someone who is so obviously uninformed. Grow up. It's a good thing that your aversion to these skinny white boys in no way detracts from their very real contributions to Scritti.

  • @Tre404 What those two "brought to the table" (how very corporate) was piss-thin, repulsive whiteboy funk. Believe me, I listened to Scritti back in the day. I know the history of funk. These characters played a miniscule part in it. Get over it.

  • @toxicmocksyndrome ... I find it interesting how most people are so hung up on a "look." Why are you so worried about the look coming back, when the focus should be on the music? Style versus substance. And you fall into the former category with your superficial attitude. Tell you what, we'll be over here -----> appreciating the music while you wallow in your miserable shallowness, standing guard against a dreaded return of 80s fashion. Geez... some people's priorities are truly fucked up.

  • @lilliangothic ... actually, Green stands well over 6 feet tall!

  • @MystyMary ... and you need professional help for that obsession! wow... lol
