For those that don't know: THe 2K R/T was the only year that the R/T Durango required 91 octane for the computer to operate properly as the 5.9/5.2 engines did not come with knock sensors. I installed Superchips 87 octane program and am running 87 octane in this video. I will add a 91 octane program running 91 octane at a later date. Other than pinging under heavy throttle above 2500rpm the engine doesn't ping/tick/knock at all. After I take off the light a couple minutes into the video you hear what I mean. Enjoy. I also have K&N FIPK, taylor 8mm Spiro wires, Fastman 52mm TB. At no point am I pushing it over 80% throttle just to keep my gas use under 20L/100km!

  • My 5.9 in my Jeep is one of those engines that require 91 or higher. Have you figured out what the pinging/ticking is caused by ??

Mine does the same damn thing "somtimes" at 2500-3000rpm.. I use 93 octane too.. and my plenum pan is clean as a whistle... so i cant figure this out..

  • @1ownjoo2 Don't hold me to it, but I believe the engine timing was either advanced or retarded a couple degrees to eek out that ever so slight performance advantage. Easy for Dodge, as the parts are the same, and all they did was use a different octane fuel to get that 5-10 hp extra, and more torque! The problem is that the computer is calibrated to this ignition timing, so to change the timing you'd have to reprogram the computer although I doubt performance would suffer much...

The timing advance on the Jeep engine is agressive, its about 15 degree advanced from the stock 5.9 on the dodge trucks. Even more if you have the mopar performance PCM, which i dont have.

I dunno im hoping this issue is a carbon issue, cause these engines HATE carbon buildup.. Either that or its the CAI doing it, cause it never did it until shortly after i put it on i believe. Im going to dump some techron in the fuel for awhile and see if it helps if its carbon

  • @1ownjoo2 I go through oil and have similar engine characteristics...comp. good, spark good, etc. I have K&N FIPK with currently an Amsoil cone filter installed for the winter as the oil filter grabs the salt dust in the air. Anyway, The Jeep 5.9 LTD and Durango R/T (2000 only), share the same PCM and engine tune. I only get 5hp more out of it with the Durango variant so perhaps our engines are timed differently. I use Amsoil power foam, shoot it straight into the intake and smokesalot

  • @1ownjoo2 #2 I've had great luck with the basic NGK V Power plugs and change them every 30K miles. I bought an SCT tuner (custom) a few years ago and it's paid for itself five fold. I save $500+ a year not getting premium fuel (0.21/L more for 94 octane here over 87 octane! or nearly $0.90/US gal more). Even when towing I don't get engine knock on the SCT 87 octane tune although performance suffers. Running 94 on the 93 tune still pings under heavy throttle and i have yet to find a

  • u still have this thing?

  • @Whitecrackertrash Durango? Yes. Superchips - No. I've been using a custom SCT Tuner for a couple years now with the BEST success out of all the tunes I've tried. 93 octane setting using 94 octane ;)

I think the problem could be carbon, as you stated on my vid driving 1100rpm.. I think doing that all the time in the city for awhile builds up major carbon hense my black pistons.. Using seafoam once smoked like crazy some of it was blue smoke too. The 2nd treatment today caused it to smoke not as bad.. but it pinged like a mofo.. I took it for a drive in 2nd at 65mph for like 20m (4k rpm) to burn/blow all the crap out. I think it worked doesnt ping anymore

    Ill let ya know

    Continue #2.

Only add ons i have currently is a Spectra cone filter, and K&N FIPK hat i got from a JY for $20. I made a ram air scoop from the grill . I tried re-routing the spark plug wires from the chyrlser TSB said.. That actually fixed my transmission shudder from 3-OD so it was probably not the tranny and actually a missfire or something..

I dunno man the pinging seems to be getting worse progressivly.. Im afraid ill hurt my engine if this keeps up.

  • @RT360ci

    continued from the spark plugs..

When i looked into the cylinders tho the pistons were all black, bumpy grimey. I do loose about 1/4 1/2 half quart of oil every 3k miles and im not sure where its going i suspect if the plenum really is good its from the PCV valve (it is new tho) cause the pressure test shows the rings are good. I used seafoam on the engine, LOTS of smoke, pistons were semi clean from that, so i decided to to use the rest today, havent checked the pistons again.

Not enough room to type all this out but basicly, it started this pinging 3 months ago (bought it 14 months ago) i only do city driving 5-15 miles or so every 2-3 days. Sometimes a little more every now and then, on top fo that i used cheap 93 octane gas from sheetz (there gas sucks). My intake manifold plenum is almost so clean you can eat off it.. pressure tests show my gasket is still good. I have very little blowby, compression is 160psi on all 8. Spark plugs are super clean

  • I just got a 2000 durango rt I love it but I never heard this pinging I'm worried I'm going to mess up my truck whats ur best suggestion
