Fierce and freezing katabatic winds howl down from the Transantarctic Mountains into the low-lying coastal shore of the Taylor Valley. On their way to the frozen sea, they strip snow and sediment from the landscape. The wind-blown gravel, sand, and clay are deposited onto Explorers Cove sea ice (only the pressure ridge of Explorers Cove, with a dark sediment drape, is visible in the background). The dark grains warm up in the Austral summer, melting the ice, and the sediments drop to the seafloor providing new habitats for marine life.
Does out ever stop blowing wind? No pun intended. :p
