@djc6394 The Diesel locomotive is a handy backup if course, but it can be used to provide electric power for the passenger cars as well. It's also nice to see the modern UP loco in the consist :)

@acbar1: 844 is an oil burner, so the fuel is oil, not coal.

Forgive me for not wanting to read through all 7+ pages of comments...if this questoin has been covered, I apologize in advance. But why did it have a diesel locomotive in the line with it? Was that just for extra power to get over Altamont?

@djc6394: The reasons Tigerskunk mentioned are correct, but for this run, the crew never bothered to bring the Genset online, so it wasn't used at all, not even for dynamic braking.
