My electronic dictionary says needn't is a modal verb.

whoops--typo. "It can be both verb and noun."

Hi Swytek,
"Need" is unusual. I can be both verb and noun: "I need a new car," or "I have special needs." The first sentence uses it as a verb; the second uses it as a noun. A modal verb? Well, I suppose it could be considered as such, but I don't regard it as a modal. I'm planning to address both "want" and "need" in the next level that I'm creating for my website. Paul
