Premieres 10/7 @ 10 PM, and airs every Tuesday at 10 PM - only on Discovery.

Across frozen rivers, barren tundra, mountains and thick forest in freezing temperatures, this grueling 1,150 mile race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska puts mushers and their dog teams through the ultimate test of human and animal teamwork and endurance.

Filmed in March 2008, TOUGHEST RACE ON EARTH: IDITAROD will tell its stories through the eyes of the men and women who dared to take on the ultimate test of human and animal teamwork and endurance. The intense preparation and training of race veterans and rookies alike show what it takes to compete not only against each other, but also Mother Nature.

  • WINNER IS JAN KOPKA, CZECH BIKER

    RESPECT !!!

  • Pointless fades to/from black, childish throaty voiced narrator, edited like an advert, whats happened to real documentary film making ?

  • I don't think it is usually too cold for them. Just like you feel hot while exercising, even in cold weather, so do they. And they have jackets and blankets and foam sleeping pads and straw for the dogs as well. I don't run races like the Iditarod, but I have never had dogs who look cold, even on -35 days.

  • I hope it is not too cold for the dogs...dogs are so loyal and sometimes people can push them too hard :~(

  • Cannot wait!!! It starts the day after my birthday! I just wish they would do one on the Junior Iditarod.

And actually the race has only been going on for 36 years. Dog mushing has been a part of native life for thousands of years though, and the Iditarod commemorates that.

  • They live for this type of work. That's all they think about. When you take out the gangline, they just go crazy.

  • Can't wait. Iditarod.

  • the Iditarod is a pretty intense race! those dogs have been bred to do that for generations like race horses

  • while to ansfav i do care.

and to everybody else i wasn't aware that this is what they do to honor the dogs or that its been around for 50 years.

but i think i understood after the first person. no need to great rude about it, thanks for informing
