Simon says: Never try to remove a hot light bulb with the power still on. So you want to change your old traditional bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs. CFL bulbs are great bulbs because they save on greenhouse emissions and gasses and cost a lot less than other bulbs.
Let me tell you a safe way to remove any kind of light bulb from a light socket.
Turn off the light and let it cool for at least 5 minutes. Using a glove or a kitchen towel, gently turn the bulb counter clockwise, be careful not to squeeze to tight. If changing the bulb at night, turn on another light or a flashlight to help you see better.
Oo, ah.. Don't worry. I know how to dispose it off, properly. If you break one, it releases small amounts of Mercury so first of all, make sure the room is well ventilated and air conditioning is off. This will help lower Mercury levels.
Use stiff paper to pick the broken pieces and then sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Never clean it up with your bare hands. Do not use broom or vacuum cleaner because brooming will break the mercury into smaller droplets and spread them, and vacuuming will put mercury into the air and increase exposure. If vacuuming is needed do it only after all visible materials are removed and dispose the vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.
Dispose it off in a glass jar with a lid or in a sealed plasic bag. You know these bulbs are really good, but if you are not careful they can cause some problems.
To be safe, do not dispose of this in the regular trash. Take it instead to the recycling center. Many stores provide CFL recycling facilities. You can even order a Recycling Pak to mail your broken CFLs at www.prepaidrecycling.com. Also you can always contact your local officials for more information.
With a few simple safety precautions your light bulbs will always shine bright.
Life has no reset button, think safety!

  • damn government use L.E.D lights they contain no mercury and use a lot less energy and you dont have to worry about how you dispose of it

  • More propaganda about "saving greenhouse emission gasses" yet fails to explain how.

CFLs contain dangerous mercury....there are complicated guidelines to follow if you want to clean up a broken bulb.

All CFLs are made in China, I dare anyone to find only ONE made in America....and our government will BAN them? No way Jose, I will stockpile American-made incandescent bulbs to enjoy the warm light for many years to come.

    Get off your high-horse environmentalists.

  • i learned nothing!!!

  • wow thats really stuiped, if u broke one u would effing die!!!! there is more mercury then that!!!!!!!!!

  • Why are the environmental wackos pushing mercury bulbs in the first place!?

I am only a common working stiff with a bachelors degree in Chemistry, so pardon my ignorance, but this just seems like a very stupid idea.

What's wrong with the incandescent light bulbs again?

  • THEY PERSON WHO MADE THIS VIDEO IS THE BIGGEST FUCKING FAGG EVER, I FEEL LIKE A FUCKING KINDEGARDENER WATCHING THIS FUCKING PEICE OF SHIT VIDEO!

  • Keep in mind that the coal power plants (who still have a rather large part in electricity production atleast in Europe) also have Hg in their emission. In the end one old school lightbulb gives more Hg to the environment that way than a CFL could.

If people would stop being lazy and recycle their CFL's, then it is no problem how much Hg is in one. As for dangerous to humans, check how much Hg can be in fish. See what I did there? As for LED's, aren't they like, quite expensive?

  • CFLs might use less power but if the power is made from alternative sources i see no reason to stop using reguler bulbs, and the fact that normal light bulbs non't have no dangerous mercury make them even better in my opinion.

  • i chose incandescent over cfl any day because cfl makes shitty annoying light

  • mercury droplets? There should not be any. It should be all vapor.

  • This is so gay !
