This is an extract from a complete performance of the Nutcracker Suite recorded in 1946 by the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stanford Robinson.

The suite can be downloaded at http://www.eavb.co.uk/lp/extrarobinson.html

The Nutcracker has since around 1960 become perhaps the most popular of all ballets, performed primarily around Christmas time. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on 19 March 1892 at an assembly of the St. Petersburg branch of the Musical Society. The suite became instantly popular. When this recording was made in 1946 the complete ballet was rarely performed but the suite was a popular concert item.
