Jimmy Dorsey was a prominent American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, trumpeter and big band leader. Along with brother Tommy they formed the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, but split in 1935, each with his own band. He had numerous big hits in the 30s-50s, several featuring vocalists Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell. In 1953 he again combined with Tommy Dorsey with the renamed band "The Fabulous Dorseys". His recording of So Rare, released in 1957, reached #2 on the Billboard chart. This selection, also released in 1957, was the flip side of June Night, which also hit the Billboard chart.

  • Is JDs boogie woogie on this album shown?

  • @865sticks It was included on the original vinyl LP issued in 1958 "The Fabulous Jimmy Dorsey" named either "Jay-Dee's Boogie Woogie" or "JD's Boogie Woogie", depending on the release date. It was also remastered and released as a CD under the same name and cover. Both are out of print but used copies are available from Amazon, eBay, etc.

  • Wow! I wish we had good music like this on the radio today!

  • If this music dosen't get you motor going and your blood pumping ,

    then you are really DEAD.

Bcause this is one SWINGING ROCKER.

  • @horarwgt I was born in '44;my mother was an immense Glenn Miller fan. She had every release of his but when we all came to Calif in '47,her mother just dumped them. I began listening to radio in the early 50's.however, as music changed I moved with it. I've always enjoyed it.I think I still have a couple 45's-So Rare/June Night, JD's BW//Sophisticated Swing and Tea For Two Cha Cha. Not sure but seem to recall it was Warren Covington w/Dorsey's orchestra on the Decca label.

  • @Cuppie4469 Tommy Dorsey choked to death in his sleep at age 51 on November 26, 1956 -- only a few months after presenting, in his televsion debut, a newcomer by the name of Elvis Presley. Jimmy died of cancer at age 53 on June 12, 1957, only days after being handed his gold record award for "So Rare" while lying in the hospital bed he would die in. Jimmy performed on "So Rare" but neither of his band's two follow-up hits, "June Night" and "JD's Boogie Woogie."

  • Fully aware that he was dying of cancer, Jimmy Dorsey poured the last of his strength into recording "So Rare." Due to his rapidly failing health, he was able to perform on a few other tracks for his final label, Fraternity. Five days after Jimmy died in 1957, Fraternity had his band, now led by Lee Castle, record enough material to flesh out a full LP. "JD's Boogie Woogie" was one of those tracks. Compare it to "Boogie Woogie," a 1938 hit for brother Tommy Dorsey, who died in November 1956.

  • Fantastic

  • I love this album! My best friend next door totally gave me this tape for my 7th birthday! (circa 1987 of course)

  • Enjoyed both Dorseys...sad that one died of acid reflux about '57 or so. What a loss
