Alexander McCall Smith's stories about Botswana's number one lady detective, Precious Rabotswe, have sold millions. Now he wants to change our perceptions of Africa. Virtuous, hardworking Precious Rabotswe represents a side of African life little reported on in the developed world. Through her fictional adventures, McCall Smith is painting a sunnier, more optimistic view of Africa. "The West took a great deal from Africa," he reasons. "I'm trying to do as much as I can to address that.

  • I believe this is the one guy who truly understand what we are all about. He has lived among us and he shows that thru his writings. Moreover he doesnt claim to know wverything but simply illustrates what he knows.

    Good job!!!!

  • I know something about a white man who has fallen in love with Africa. I only wish that I could have written so well, and established a short story prize. He has educated the rest of the world of the virtue and honest wisdom of the African Soul. Thanks to 'Sandy'.

  • Has anyone mentioned that HBO is in it's 2nd season of "#1 Ladies Detective" Starring Jill Scott as Precious & the girl who was "Dream Girls" playing her Sec. My favorite series EVER! and Jill Scott is a cutie :)

  • This man is a genius! Every country has a grim side but that negative side seems to be the only side that Westerners see when they go to other parts of the world, especially Africa! This perception has been successful in keeping investors out of even the stable Africa, helping to perpertuate the poverty there! What this man has done for Botswana, by telling the truth about that country, is incredibly brilliant and we can only say, thank you sir!!!

  • Super bon documentaire. Merci!

  • If you've read and loved the "#1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, try the audiobooks, read by South African actress Lisette Lecat. They are some of my favourite listening material. Amazon has them--but I borrow mine from my local public library. Repeatedly!

  • I am so glad to find this video. I love Alexander McCall Smith's books. If I have a bad day, reading his books warms my heart and makes me smile again. I was always interested to learn more about the author. I hope one day I will have the privilege to meet with him.

  • i have loved these books for years. i just finished the "miracle at speedy motors" last night. i'm so happy to have found this video. i'm also glad to have bought his books too now, knowing that he doesn't sound like a pompous ass. don't like his 44 scotland series, or bertie much though.

  • Having spent some time in Africa (only 4 weeks in Uganda), I found these books captured so many of the wonderful sights, sounds, and people I came to love there. IMHO, if you want to understand the mindset and worldview of many average Africans, read these books.

  • i've read all six books of the no.1 ladies dective agency and am looking forward to the 7th.
