This video explains the process by which biometric readers capture fingerprints.
1. Image Enhancement
====================
The image of the fingerprint is enhanced and cleaned up. Detail is key.
2. Binary Processing
====================
The image is changed from grayscale to black and white, so that it can be digitized into a series of 1's and 0's
3. Thinning
===========
The resultant, purely black and white digitized image is cleaned into a 1 pixel-width ridge for easy identification in a process known as thinning.
4. Ridge Reconstruction
=======================
we perform a process called "Ridge Reconstruction", during which we eliminate spurious fusions (multiple joining points), air bubbles and islands (little ovals in the print lines), rejoin cuts and remove fake ends.
5. Minutiae Extraction
======================
Once this has been done, a highly complex mathematical formula (which is part of what differentiates each manufacturers algorithm from the other), is used to classify fusions and endings, and to decide the final direction of the minutiae points.
Finally, we begin the process of actually extracting the minutiae points from the final cleaned binary image. Once we are done, the final picture bears no resemblance to the original print nor to anything other than the algorithm that extracted the points in the first place.
