@KatyKane It takes at least 4 weeks before the spinal cord and brain begin to form, actually. My point is that if no-one wants the fetus, then it it not wrong to abort it.
Also, putting 'life' in capitals does not give it magical, ethical weight. It just looks silly
@tommyk77 this LIFE form of which you speak has a heart beat at 17 days; brain function and feels pain. please educate yourself before you make such comments. Even if this child is not wanted by his/her birth mother of father, it IS wanted by somebody. In addition, women and men bear the scars of abortion for many years to come following the abortion of their babies. don't hate - educate. God bless.
@19afterain Contraception is not 100% reliable. Besides, that's not the point. Of course, people should be using contraception if they don't want a child, but I just don't see why we have to give human rights to a life form that has no interests, is not self-aware, cannot feel pain yet and is not wanted.
Also, utility does not determine the "humanness" of something and Godwin's Law is on wikipedia.
@tommyk77 Of course id pounce on your use of the word utility its the word you used to determine the humanness of something. I dont even know what Godwin's Law is.
Why does a nervous system make a difference
So if a new life is inconvenient then you should just get rid of it is what your saying. Also if you dont want a baby its not that hard to not have sex when you know their period could be happening there are only certain days of the month girls can get pregnant
@19afterain Of course I was going to call you on your wording... it's important!
I knew you'd pounce on the word 'utility'. Didn't think you'd invoke Godwin's Law though.
A fetus has a nervous system by the third trimester and don't play the whole "how's it different to a few weeks ago" argument, as we've covered that.
Pregnancy is a potentially life-changing thing for many people and if it is not a good time to bring a child into the world, abortion can *save* lives from ruin
@tommyk77 You walk a fine line when you determine humanity based on discernible utility. You sound very much like Hitler when he argued that the Germans were a higher race and all others are lesser and therefore have less "discernible utility." If your argument is true then Hitler is justified in doing all of his atrocities. Because he was simply disposing of those with less discernible utility.
@tommyk77 how did i know you were going to address my use of the word should instead of could? this has nothing to do with what we're discussing just a different choice of words. Why the third trimester is there more discernible utility then, then there was two weeks earlier? A fetus most definitely has senses, and I am placing value not based on whether or not it has social connections, interests, or opinions those things dont matter (a baby does have the potential for those things however)
@19afterain I didn't say "should". You need to learn how to argue ethics, as the words I use are very important.
Your argument is a dogmatic attempt to place value on something that has no senses, social connections, interests nor opinions. Nor does it have any discernible utility at this point.
My argument is that the line between human and flesh is a blurred cloud, that we should draw a practical line at around the third trimester. This line is different for disabled babies in my view.
