...no, the metronome won't for a piece like this, if one's technique is not good (like mine here, to some extent). and tempo rubato on an etude like this would be pretty imaginative indeed...hmm...

the suggestion for PRACTICE with a metronome WAS NOT a suggestion to PERFORM it metronomically! Hey, even in the foreword to in my initial Schirmir edition of the Chopin Etudes, it says that Chopin always had his students practice with a metronome! "Tempo Rubato" IS NOT an excuse for INCESSANT rhythmic sloppiness, which metronomic practice would eliminate! Metronomic practice would ultimately be the basis for an artist's fluidity while rendering any repertoire

...that's fine, if you like - I'm just saying it's most likely irrelevant on an etude like this. After all, it's the same foreword printed on other Schirmer editions of Chopin, where such instruction would perhaps be more relevant.
