Just a note to say that having done a considerable amount of research, I have changed my views on lagoons. Tidal stream technologies have now been developed which can operate in shallow waters such as those of the estuary. Even they have issues, but they are at least sustainable. Barrages in silt-heavy estuaries are not.
It could provide some protection against sea-borne flooding for sure, but even when used to keep the tide out, it still constitutes an obstruction to river-borne floodwaters. And for the majority of the time, the tides are not big enough of themselves to be a problem in this regard anyway. As the embayment silts up due to reduced tidal flow, freshwater flood risks would inevitably rise. There are so many better ways to generate power than this technological dinosaur
Surely a correctly situated barrage could provide some protection against flooding in the Severn valley? Rather than being an obstruction to "outward release" it would be an obstruction to "inward high tide"?
Thanks for posting this video. The barrage proposals are a very bad idea.I live in the Severn Valley, and I was one of the thousands of people affected by the floods following the rains of July 20th. We do not need ANY obstruction that slows the outward release of floodwaters. Minor floods are commonplace, and major floods happen every few years. Anything which makes them worse may cost lives. And the barrage can only generate power on the outgoing tide. Why not follow the tidal lagoons proposal?
