I disagree- all it takes for a band to be a genre is to claim to be that genre. To me if your going to call something steampunk it had better be evocative of some victorian vaudevillian or classic baroque style. Don't get me wrong Abney Park totally delivered but if something sounded like actual punk (some of The Cog is Dead) I wouldn't call it steampunk. But that's just me.

@MrBrennstoff The thing with steampunk music is that it's more defined by the themes of the music than the style. Thus, one is never really going to find two steampunk bands that are similar in anyway other than perhaps the instruments they play. If you want the world music sort of thing some AP songs have, listen to Sunday Driver (UK). Steampunk has everything, from the gothic and melancholy to the comedy and the actual punk. That's what I love.
