On February 5, I was at the Monarch colony Cerro Pelon to see the overwintering Monarch Butterflies (Mariposas Monarca). This is in the community of Macheros which is near El Capulin in the state of Mexico. The group I was with, Monarchs Across Georgia, and myself rode horses up the mountain for about an hour then we walked for a short distance. We were at an elevation of about 9,459 feet. Monarchs were covering everything. They were on the tree branches, on the tree trunks, on the ground, on people, and in the sky. There were so many that you could hear their wings, like the rustling of leaves. While we were there we saw three pairs of Monarchs mating, which is early since they usually mate at the end of the month. The visit to this colony was overwhelming. It was much more than I expected.
