An elegy to the working man, as seen through the eyes of an artist.
Visionary as always, Martels shot this 1978 film in a tragi-comic documentary style he called "docu-reality-diary". This was well before the 'reality tv' trend became the taste of the day.
Signalling a rare gesture in taking his performance works to the public arena, and an unexpected preparedness to mix with common folk, this piece shows Martel at his most iconoclastic and socially insightful. The narrative has a theme of "the mirror has two faces", an idea Vinukurov visited to often. Vinukurov's prescient use of the mobile phone foreshadows the 'yuppie' culture that lay just ahead in the eighties.
Music added later: the original featured 3 full minutes of a man screaming.
