A view of the U-shaped Mt Bandai from a copper-coloured lake called Akanuma. The water in this lake is rich in Fe, thus dyeing the rocks to a shade of red. The barren rock face is actually the Kushigamine crater and it is still steaming. This place had seen a tremendous volcanic explosion in 1888, similar to the Mt St Helens (USA) eruption of 1980. The height of the mountain is said to have reduced by 600 m and the debris avalanche dammed a whole river, creating numerous colourful ponds around the foot of Mt Bandai.
