Running a hard drive motor

Running a hard drive motor with an RC speed controller. Hard drive spindle motor is a brushless motor with WYE wiring with 4 connectors. Find the common, then attach the other three to the speed controller. Use RC radio to control the speed controller and drive the motor.

Can the motor be powered by the esc alone or must a radio controller be attached?

The esc just needs a PWM signal. So you can run it from other stuff like an Arduino.

Im having trouble wiring the pinouts to a usb cable, and Im using a multimeter. The usb port is supplying 5v. I manage to get it spinning for 2 sec sometimes more, but later stops. I took an electrical class, but Im still a newbie. Please, help!

should also add use a BEC to reduce the voltage for the servo tester all up will cost less that $10 and save having to use all the radio gear.

Just use a servo tester to drive the ESC... about $5 or less on Ebay, thanks for sharing ;)
