Sag Harbor dates back over 300 years and was first revered as a deep water harbor. Early days brought whaling to the community.

Today it is a Mecca for summer travelers. The Saturday Sag Harbor Farmer's Market at the Breakwater Yacht Club parking lot features organic vegetables, honey, mushrooms, apples, bread and baked goods, eggs, seafood, flowers, cheese, pickles and other fresh produce from East End farmers, fishers, and food makers.

The town of Sag Harbor is a walker's paradise with interesting shops, restaurants and bars peppered along Main Street and side streets. One can find some unusual antiques and scrimshaw. At provisions, a local natural food store and cafe there are exotic spices, fruits and vegetables.

On Main Street is The American Hotel, one of historic Sag Harbors landmark buildings was built in 1846 at the height of the Whaling era. 158 years later The Hotel is still regarded by locals and visitors as one of the most elegant, charming and professionally run establishments on the East End of Long Island. The intimate character of The Hotel with its eight superbly appointed guest rooms and award-winning restaurant. The American Hotel is a member of the Historic Hotels of America and is also included in America's Elite 1000 hotels.

Lots of historic buildings, one of the oldest is a shop dating to 1832. A little more recent nostalgia can be found at a real 5 & 10 store with coin operated rides for the kids at the front door. Inside are aisles filled with dime store items that one may have thoughts had gone away with the buggy whip. there is even sag harbor old fashioned soda pop,

At Tutto Il Giorni Italian Restaurant owned by an Italian from Como, fresh burrata and red tomatoes are a stunning appetizer only rivaled by the pasta with spicy clams. It is a bucolic town that seems a million miles away from the frantic pace of New York City, 90 miles away.

If you come by boat there is a sailboat attached to the breakwater as a reminder that the calm seas aren't always that calm.
