Everyone knows Ansel Adams, but few can say, "He changed my life." "If you printed for Ansel, then everyone presumed that you were a pretty good printer, and indeed you were." That's how David Gardner remembers Adams as he remembers him in a series of incidents Gardner views as critical in his career as one of the premier printers of 'coffee table' books.

  • My own mentor was a close friend of Ansel and knew the rest of the group.

  • @AdlerChalk You are a lucky person.

This October I'll get together - again - with Al Weber and friends, all who knew and worked with Adams. They are an aging bunch (as am I,) and always interesting.

  • @AnthonyMournian I guess I am. I was taught how to think in black and white but I fell out with my mentor in the end.

I do have some original prints that he took with Ansel on a trip so I will keep them dear and safe. I value the history of the craft.

  • thank you so much.

  • Very informative! This reveals aspects of Ansel's work that isn't documented very well. As a large format photographer myself who practices Ansel's classic Zone System, I really appreciate this. Thanks for posting.

  • thnak you for sharing this important documentary of my favorite photographer and master. Read his books; among the most useful of all times.
