I noticed that this great song was nowhere on youtube in its studio form. Jim Morrison wrote this 17-minute epic back while The Doors were around. It was supposed to take up an entire side of Waiting for the Sun, but they ended up only using the "Not to Touch the Earth" section. On some Best Of compilation, the original unreleased song was released in its entirety. Enjoy:

Not to touch the earth, not to see the sun
Nothing left to do but run, run, run
Let's run, let's run

House upon the hill, moon is lying still
Shadows of the trees witnessing the wild breeze
Come on, baby, run with me
Let's run

Run with me, run with me, run with me
Let's run

The mansion is warm at the top of the hill
Rich are the rooms and the comforts there
Red are the arms of luxuriant chairs
And you won't know a thing till you get inside

Dead president's corpse in the driver's car
The engine runs on glue and tar
Come on along, not going very far
To the east to meet the Czar

Run with me, run with me, run with me
Let's run

Some outlaws live by the side of a lake
The minister's daughter's in love with the snake
Who lives in a well by the side of the road
Wake up, girl! We're almost home

We should see the gate by morning
We should be inside by evening

Let the carnival bells ring
Let the serpent sing
Let everything

We came down the rivers and highways
We came down from forests and falls
We came down from Carson and Springfield
We came down from Phoenix enthralled

And I can tell you the names of the kingdom
I can tell you the things that you know
Listening for a fistful of silence
Climbing valleys into the shade

I am the Lizard King
Retire now to your tents and to your dreams
Tomorrow we enter the town of my birth
I want to be ready

  • This really is an epic i tried to put myself in the scenario of the lyrics and during the musical parts i was in dream land! great song!!!

  • @ronaldmcdonald333 On this version of Celebration of The Lizard, The Palace of Exile (the last part of the song, after the "We Came Down" part) isn't in its entirety. If you want to hear all of that last part, search for it. Really short, but great.

  • Shit, This Rocks!!!! Morrison gos Crazy on this song.Love it,Love it!!!

  • Yeah. One reason I love The Doors so much is that on all of their epics, he just completely goes off...into his own zone, who knows where.

  • If you truly think about everything he says, you feel almost enlightened by the end of the song.

  • @restrada90 It is John Lennon transforming from his humanoid form to his form of the Walrus. Of course, after making such a transformation, John was prone to utter a loud, walrus-like noise. Such is what you hear.

  • this is a studio version?

  • So morbid, so mature. This song empties and fills my soul with an uncertainty ironic and comforting.

  • @PanicDAEW Perfect combination....

  • @PanicDAEW true

  • @haupper Whoa.. I read your comment like... right as he sang it. Weird!

  • We came down from Carson and Springfield

We came down from Phoenix enthralled

  • The Doors + LSD + Nature = Heaven

  • "Waiting for the Sun" would have had a daring reputation and better reception if this had been released as an album side.

  • @Metalhead4569 Wasn't Paul the walrus?
