8/5/09 The Center for Constitutional Rights has filed an appeal seeking to vacate the "bad conduct" discharge of Camilo Mejia for refusing to return to fight in Iraq. Camilo was the first soldier to publicly condemn the war and refuse to return. He was reduced in rank, sentenced to 12 months in military prison and given a bad conduct discharge.
@RImusclebear I hear where you are coming from and hope to clarify my comment. Alot of young men and women join the Armed Forces for the sole purpose of getting job training and yes, a college education. I served in the USAF and got a two year degree that I wouldn't be able to afford on my own. Yes even poor kids should be able to attend college if they have the qualifications. Just remember when you join the service you swear to support and defend a constitution that no longer applies to you.

I am retired military and served 22 years and I am gay. Received an honorable discharge and the retirement that goes with it. It is really time we brought our sons and daughters beck from wars that are impossible to win. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are turning into another Viet Nam. Next we will probably be fighting in Libya. enough is enough!

@sleepingbagpiper What's wrong with that? A lot of people will have an opportunity to go to college who otherwise wouldn't! So you are saying poor people or others who wouldn't have the opportunity shouldn't go to college!

This man was punished for his crime. And his crime was seeing the light. The us army soldiers live in the dark, they themselves do not know what they are fighting for. The answer lies with the CIA, which stands for, cocaine import agency.

That was nice of him to serve. But he singed up being told what he could face. Nobody likes war. But I know many who've served with honor in Iraq and they have good things to say about how things went there and how the soliders there are good and honest men and women. There are creeps in every crowd, but the good FAR outweigh the bad. God bless our troops and their mission to keep terrorist murderers from getting here again.
