The South African Gumboot Dance has its origins in the gold mines of South Africa. Miners working under harsh conditions developed a rhythmic method of communication using taps and stamping. The routines were often parodies of the actions of the officers and guards. Shosholoza is a folk song sung by laborers far away from home, sung by workers in a call and response style.
