Vanderbilt University English professor Mark Wollaeger gives a talk at the University of Richmond. Wollaeger analyzes D. H. Lawrence in relation to two great modernist themes—technology and ritual—by looking at two moments in his texts: the European, technological engagement of Women in Love versus the American engagement with Indian dance in his travel essays and American fiction.
Wollaeger currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on Anglo-American modernism, modernist culture, twentieth-century British literature and literary theory. He served as president of the Modernist Studies Association (MSA) in 2004-2005 and in 2006 ran the MSA Book Prize.
