please help me to understand... why does everything have to be so sterile for mushys to grow when they grow naturally in the wild where it is far from sterile, forgive my ignorance..

No rye is not covered in spores, this would be useless because it would contaminate easily and become a health hazard.
This is fully colonized grain and is solid white. It may be rye or any other cereal grain.
