Bach wrote this as the final movement of his 2nd Partita for Solo violin in d minor. Musicologists now think that it was written as a sort of private requiem for the death of his first wife. It is a very moving piece and one that has inspired musicians, and transcriptions, through the ages.

  • I noticed that I havr spelt "passionate" in 3 different ways only one of which is right! This is what Bach does to me!

  • Bach is often considered to be the ultimately cerebral composer and he was. But he was also a pationate person - passionate about music, women, life! This is a pasionate interpretation of one of Bach's essential pieces in which a succession of single notes creates a sense of harmony. Sarah Plum, a leading and passionate violinist and pedagogist is giving a masteful performance. A nice video and recording too. Many thanks. - Athan
