Lord Peter Wimsey - Title & End Credits

With the second four-parter, The Unpleasentness at the Bellona Club, Title and End Credits for Ian Carmichael's BBC Lord Peter Wimsey series changed. They stayed in style until the end of the run, although each opening showed variations pointing to the story in question, like the Bellona Club Card here.

All in all, there were five Dorothy L. Sayers Lord Peter novels filmes with Ian Carmichael in the title role, until the BBC sropped it - despite its success. Years later they did the effort to film those not yet adapted, with Michael Petherbridge taking over as Wimsey. They were, though, not my cup of tea.

I loved Ian Carmichael and the series, of course. And really what a great character compared to today's fiddling snobbery.

This is such a great theme,as previously mentioned, evocative of the era...but it's a bit deeper than that...the real genius is in that sour, off-key piano note at the end, the mood goes from lighthearted and whimsical to dark and ominous all in an instant...encapsulating the heart and soul of any good period mystery...behind the thin veneer of culture and breeding there's actually dark going-ons in England's green and pleasant.Positively genius.
