We had the opportunity to speak to Associate Professor Philip Mendes, Department of Social Work, Monash University, who will be speaking at IIR's National Juvenile Justice Summit 2011taking place on 9-10 March 2011 in Melbourne.

1. Local and international research suggests an over-representation of young people leaving state out of home care in the youth justice system, why do you think this is the case?
2. To what extent have leaving care plans and policies addressed and minimised the involvement with youth justice?
3. How can the ongoing role of post-care youth justice address personal disadvantage particularly when young people are in custody at the time of their exit from care?
4. What is the current availability of preventive practices and policies to reduce the number of care leavers involved in the youth justice system?
