@TheBeebopper She is reffering more to a gruel than a soup. Yes, the spoon has a circular bowl. This "soup" is usually used as a starter to help fill you up because there isn't enough meat for the main course. There's no chunks in it, because they scraped the plates clean at the table yesterday. If it's a main course soup (not very middle-class) use the shovel like every other labourer.

@Sarandib22 Wrong implement. Better to slurp from the cup than use a shovel. . Do what you like, unless you have a hankering for brown-nosing the middle-class.

I CANNOT sip my soup from the side of the spoon. It runs around the edges of my mouth. Is it because your average soup spoon is made oblong for the average eater who puts it in their mouth front-first? Are formal dining spoons shaped differently?
Also, I can't "sip" the chunks in my soup, like the potatoes and veggies and stuff. I'm assuming then that the kind of soup you'd be served formally is very thin? Anyone know?
