Memorable film quotes (from IMDB):

Adolf Hitler: "It's good fortune for the government that the masses don't think. Otherwise, human society as we know it might cease to exist."

Eva Braun: (to Hitler) "What a pity for the world you couldn't have devoted your life to art."

Josef Goebbels: "The heart of Germany has ceased to beat. The Fuhrer is dead."

  • I really enjoyed this movie and Guinness portrays Hitler well, but it's hard to get past the fact that Guinness is so clearly, obviously an Englishman and not German. Anthony Hopkins was the same way, but he played Hitler more as a deranged psycho who still wielded the power to send tens of thousands to their death (which was true). Alec Guinness' portrayal seems more of a pathetic man who doesn't have any power anymore, which wasn't exactly true.

I agree. I think many would accept that Bruno Ganz gives the most convincing performance as Hitler. I have trouble watching Guinness in this role even though I'm a great fan of his.

"Not since perhaps Rod Steiger's portrayal of Benito Mussolini in Moustapha Akkad's LION OF THE DESERT (1980) have I seen a notorious dictator more realistically acted than Bruno Ganz's stunning display as "Der Fuerer" in The Downfall (2004)."

  • Did Hitler understand English? Calculus?

  • Bruno ganz has done the best interpretation in a movie of hitler certainly deserved an Academy Award

  • @VideoGamerPianist

DOWNFALL (2004) was a remake of this very film.

Anthony Hopkins also starred in a remake of this in BUNKER (1981 TV).

  • @contrerados No. Bruno Ganz was the better Hitler.

  • Anthony Hopkins' depiction of Hitler in "The Bunker" is far more realistic as it clearly depicts the desolation and rather paranoic, decadent figure of Hitler. His mannerisms are also closer to what the real man did.

Wow, Eva Braun in blackface. And the remarkable thing is that historical photos have proven she likely put it on more than once.

  • @BroadwayJosh If i'm not mistaken , reading/watching about his life medics, the last doctor he had just 'experimented' on Hitler.. we have to thank that doctor some how... how cruel it sounds.

Wrong medication was his doom. wrong medication turned him into a old man.Parkinson coz of medication.

If someone knows more about it, let me know ( including some links please) . Just click on my nickname and leave a message, thank you.

  • @RecklessTurtle123456 You're reading too much into it, IMHO.
