Johnny Smith recorded his version 55.
Chet did his in 57, so yeah, 3 years before the ventures turned it into a worldwide hit and surf classic.

The ventures never heard johnny smiths version only chet atkins version they simplified it some but it stood out from the records on the radio then and was a hit [ johnny smith actually based the song on softly as a morning sunrise ] .
