hey i had to put a shim on the back of my starter. on my 58 300

The starter drive's spring is too worn or loose. I had a similar problem with my Edsel.

TYPICAL WITH A OLD 272.292.312. OHV FORD MOTOR AFTER MANY YEARS 3 THINGS IT COULD BE 1 THE RING GEAR ON THE FLY WHEEL WORN.2 THE BENDIX SPRING NOT DISENGAGING FROM THE SHAFT.3 SHIMMED STARTER.

sounds like the starter needs to be shimmed or the overrunning clutch needs to be replaced on the stater.
low compresion to start?
