North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison

The North rim is much harder to get to (windy roads plus about 10 miles of dirt road) but it probably has 1/10th the number of people).

Woke up somewhat after sunrise (about 6ish) and after lyin still for a while I should the sleep from my body and headed on to the North rim. Spectacular views but really too windy to fly. As I went down the view points on the rim the wind dropped. Finally I decided it was green light on go. First flight went well, but realized that the video looked poor as the cam was always ahead and needed to be pointed downwards to get a good view. The second flight was much more hairy, for the first few minutes it was just a battle to keep it in the air, then the wind dropped and the rest of the flight went well. Moved back down the canyon to the first viewpoint and decided to fly again. 3 minute flight but it went well. Such a rush flying in a no recovery zone. Decided to go for another flight but stopped by ranger. I think he really wanted me to fly its just that he couldnt be seen to endorse it. Windy drive over to Gunnison, stopped at lake on way to wash. Water was a little green for my liking but washed anyway. Very windy. Picked up food in Gunnison and sorted out some files before heading onto Sand dunes. Got there at dusk. Fantastic drive through the Sangre de Cristo valley with the low sun on the dunes and mountains. Had a look around at dunes, slept outside park in car. Car just by roadside but only 4 cars all night (this is a road to nowhere). Mosquitoes were bad.

My dog goes to the edge and will keep her back legs planted and lean forward until she's actually on the tops of her hind feet (instead of the pads if that makes any sense, her hinds are fully stretched while her front is normal as if she were standing) it freaks me out every time she does it but I guess she's enjoying the view as well. 970 baby!
