You totally mis understood what the dog was trying to do. When a dog hears another of its pack in distress it will join in its calls of distress for two reasons. One to join in and show sympathy for the dogs distress. Two to alarm the rest of the pack that there is a member in distress and that a fellow pack memeber is there with that distressed animal and to come on the run to offer more help. So, the dog was relaying the babys message in order for you people to give aid. Good DOG

The dog isn't trying to 'comfort the baby' it is just howling because it thinks the baby is howling. Some dogs will howl when they hear car sirens, people singing high notes, piano playing etc...
it's an instinct from the social bonding activity that wolves have... a way to communicate their presence over long distances.
