Oh my heavens, today we're taught by our public schools that all these people that have businesses and provide services and products are EVIL SINFUL CAPITALISTS that are ruining society with their GREED and PROFITS. Meanwhile, the biggest corporation of all - the US Federal Government - tells us how wonderful they are and how they need all of our money to waste on program after program that have already been proven as failures.

@silverstream27 I am firmly of the belief that if the Vietnam War & the Kennedy assasination never happened the mindset of the 1950s would have just continued through the 1960s. The war & the death of president kennedy is what caused it to ....as you said.... "unravel from the inside". Those two events led Americans to not trust their government and a deep mistrust smoldered till it reached a flash point in the 60s.....it triggered a number of non war movements as well

@stephanieweasley92 you are right.....a college degree was not an absolute necessity back then. While my dad was going to get his 4 year degree, a masters and a PHD life had passed him by....and wasn't making all that much more money. Meanwhile my best friends dad was a machinist and he already owned his own house, nice car and money in the bank

@19EHF there are two sides to every coin.....lets look at 2012.....the USA is collapsing, paper dollars backed by nothing, terrorism, the mortgage crisis, 300 bank failures in the last 3 years, huge government bail-outs of questionable success, a national debt that cannot ever be paid off, sky rocketing; unemployment, illegal drug use, teen pregnancy, suicides from bullying, endless military involvements, being detained in prison indefinately w/ no right to a lawyer (gitmo in cuba)......

@Michiganette men equally worked like slaves back then because they were the sole bread winners of their family... and even today die on an average of 3 years earlier than women. Also lets not forget the men were the ones who were drafted into the military, sent to war to die or come back mentally and or physically crippled. So being a man in the 1950s was not all fun and games
