Adam's argument is a bit shallow to me. Many people find comfort and poetry in Mein Kampf or racist music or many other things that are completely destructive to humanity. The simple fact, which Eli seemed to have gotten across that Adam ignored, is that this book is an example of senseless cruelty that people ignore because of fluffy "beautiful" writing (which really is in the eye of the beholder).
Your simplistic and arrogant analysis of Tolkien are ridiculous and completely unfounded. If you actually did some research into the Tolkein topics you're talking about you'd realize you're coming across completely imbecilic.
That story sounds like a bit of nonsense. If the writers of the old testament wanted to be poetic, all they had to say is that the world is the world and G-d will not always be there to get you out of the situations that you find yourself in. In other words, G-d does not do parlor tricks. So stop praying for favours.
I love the shocked face of Eliezer as he realizes that yes, Adam is really going to tell the story of Job as an example of something good about religion.
Once again Eliezer applies his "keen and penetrating" intellect to a problem and comes up wanting. If he actually understood the christian faith and the context of the book of Job his comments would even to his mind be out of place and wrong. I prescribe knowledge and reading as the cure here otherwise Eliezer should stop commenting on things he doesn't comprehend.

There are plenty of worse diseases out there today than boils! Chronic pain conditions, for example. No there is no cure for pain.
