Yeah but in uneven maps they are cheap. There are some maps where one player is on a hill. So as long as that player has enough mortars to force an attack, there is no way to fight your way uphill against an average player.

he hosted it and gave me that side, I didnt even ask. there were no rules so I was expecting him to also have a lot of mortars, which many players would. I think that they should make mortars less good, but I did what I expected he would. If I had known, I would have probably chosen 24lb foot artillery

Its still pretty strange that mortars in the game have nearly twice the range than in real life. Hopefully thats fixed soon.

Mortars are not cheap at all...There are ways to get around them as they do have a minimum range so if you can push up fast enough you can make them useless.
