VA .049 MK1 with RC throttle

This is the one that started it all over 15 years ago. The Russian made, VA .049 was the first new 1/2A engine to come along in years. Unlike the Shuriken, it was very light and in fact, the lightest 1/2A ever. It was an AAN engine and didn't use a sleeve saving a lot of weight and bulk. It was meant to be a WFO free flight and Ukie engine but it accepted an RC throttle quite readily.

The ideal prop for it is the 5.5 X 2 APC. If a Cox 5 X 2.5 was available, it could turn out to be superior. This one wasn't fully broken in yet but it still gives out over 20K with a solid idle of 4K. Some examples have idled down to 3K and under. My best did 23K on the same prop with 25% Omega fuel. Like Cox, this one MUST have castor in the fuel, the more the better.

For years we had been hearing the excuses given for poor throttling of 1/2A and small engines. This was the very first 1/2A that exhibited virtually perfect throttling by conventional means as in your typical .40 sized engine. It has schneurle porting, modern AAN construction and of all things, a proper muffler.

Some said it's a 1/2A, can't be done. Some said the prop's too small, not enough flywheel effect. Some said, 1/2As run too cool. (See the TD .09).
The VA .049 MK1, the MK2 and a properly done up Norvel and Brodak/CS disproves all the theories. Proper timing and port design along with an adjustable airbleed are all that's needed.
Still working on the TD .020 and a unique VA .020.

Yes, that is the Cox, high compression head. The underside is a trumpet shape. The VA MK1 didn't come with a head/plug, it was intended that you use the Cox head. The Norvel and Wasp, head and glow button also work. As well, you can use a turbo plug. How to make an adaptor for that, do a search on RCUniverse for "turbo plug how to".

The tachometer uses a photo sensitive pickup to register the prop blades going past the sensor on the unit. It has a setting to record the revolutions per minute of two blade and three blade propellers. Any hobby shop that sells Radio Control Aircraft should have them.

Hi. Can these r.p.m. counters measure the speed of flywheels, or are they limited to propellors only? This is way kewl, a throttled .049.

Yesterday at the Hobby store, I tried to find a .010 and .020 but they no longer carry them. I guess they have become a collectors item or Cox no longer makes them.

My first experience with a .049 came just one day b4 my 12th birthday. It was a Cox Funny Car. It was so loud and fast (no throttle) that I got scared and almost threw it out a 3 story window.

u know alot about these? I have a cox thimble drone spitfire plane but i don't think its rc it has a line on it like a kyte don't know anything about them i have a helicopter to they are mint can u explain about them i don't thnk there's even gas tanks in them should there be
