Farmers in southwest Iowa banned together at the Nebraska City bridge of Highway 2 to try and pump standing water from the nearby fields, over the top of the federal flood levy and back into the Missouri River channel.
Floodgates that would normally allow rainwater to flow through the levy and into the river are closed because the river level is so high, if the gates
were open, river water would flow freely into the farmland. This leaves the abundance of rainfall nowhere to go, but deepen around the highway and
spread out in the countryside.[ghsvid]
