Scientists Spy 'Eye of God'

Telescope Captures 'Eye of God' in Space

European astronomers have taken a spectacular photo of a "cosmic eye" peering down from space.
The object, nicknamed the "Eye of God," is the Helix planetary nebula, a giant shell of gas given off by a dying star, according to The Times of London. The nebula lies 700 light years away in the constellation Aquarius.
A telescope in Chile captured this spectacular image of the Helix planetary nebula, nicknamed the "Eye of God." The object lies 700 light years away in the constellation Aquarius. The brilliant colors are created as a star releases gas and dust as it dies into a white dwarf.

Its brilliant colors are created as gas released from the star's surface burst out and are illuminated by ultraviolet light, according to The Register, an online technical publication.
The image was captured with a giant telescope at the European Southern Observatory in La Silla, Chile.
Although the Helix is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, it is difficult to spot because its light fans over a wide area.
German astronomer Karl Ludwig Harding was the first scientist to record the Helix nebula, including it on a list of objects in 1824. Earlier photographs showed its shape resembling a corkscrew, which inspired the name Helix.

Feel like you are being watched? This infrared image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope shows the Helix nebula, a cosmic starlet notable for its vivid colors and eerie resemblance to a giant eye.

Resembling comets streaking across the sky, these four speedy stars are plowing through dense interstellar gas, creating brilliant arrowhead structures called bow shocks. "We think we have found a new class of bright, high-velocity stellar interlopers," Raghvendra Sahai of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said Jan. 7.

  • Look to heavens for signs...first the hand now an eye..maybe...

  • God did make the Universe! God is the only one who can make Something out of Noting!

  • @tinman842 This has to do with the exposure time of the different images.

  • well its amazing... how u can see so clearly so far away and all the galazies behind the eye ... and stars are also quite visisble.... yet were to beleive you cant see the moon upclose or any stars around it... with any telescope. and vice vercy. pics from the moon looking back on earth. no stars in background ..... yea right.

  • The "eye of God" is just a NAME the scientist give to that..."thing"...in fact that isnt the eye of God...however,the creation of God is really amazing, how many planets, stars, galaxies, the universe is really awesome...what a Powerfull and amazing mind create all that

  • te universe is just awesome!

  • @louisenriquez29 yes ... in fact you are very close... "Eye of Ra" means one of constellations (Eye of Horus or tears of Ra...) - Ra was in fact (originally) representing whole universe (visible) by Egyptians. His other name is also Brahma...
