For those not familiar with the" Watkins Award", it is the most prestigious award in the nation for African-American Male High School Scholar Athletes. We have a college graduation rate of nearly 98% by our alumni. Six Watkins Award alumni were in the 2010 NFL draft including # 3 over-all Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma) and Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle (Florida State). Many of our alumni attend this annual weekend representing major universities across the nation and NFL teams. For the past 20 years the impressive trophy for the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Award is produced by Jostens Renaissance to recognize a premiere African-American male scholar athlete who exhibits in his personal life a commitment to high academic standards and substantive service to his community. The Watkins Trophy Award recognizes and honors these fine young men for being positive role models who excel in citizenship and academics as well as being premier athletics.
The commitment of friends, alumni, small business owners , corporations' and foundations provides resources for the Watkins Awards financial needs, as well as ensuring its future. Each year the NAAAA benefits from gifts and sponsorships that support our programs, activities and future endowments. All of our programs ensure the holistic education of our young men to become Intellectually Competent, Socially Conscious and Academically Rooted. By participating in the Watkins Award program they have access to mentors, and workshops to ensure that each Watkins Award Alumni grad is ready to face the world with confidence, competence and an understanding that "to those that much is given, much is expected.
